Description
Parenting Plus: From Survival to Connection
A Whole Family Guide to PDA and Autism
About the series:
Parenting Plus: From Survival to Connection is a compassionate webinar series from bestselling author Missing The Mark, Eliza Fricker exploring PDA and autism through the lens of nervous systems, emotional safety, relationships, and family wellbeing.
Future topics include:
Reducing the pressure and spotting hidden demands, communication for safety, overwhelm and recovery, relationships and the wide family, school impact and burnout, parenting with trust.
Because parenting neurodivergent children often asks more of families this series aims to support not just the child, but the whole family. This is not a ‘how to’ rather a supportive guide to with the tools you already have.
Session 3 Meltdowns, Shutdowns, Distress and Finding Safety Again
There are moments when everything becomes too much.
And in the middle of it all, a parent or carer desperately trying to work out what to say, what to do and how to make things better.
These moments can feel frightening, overwhelming and incredibly lonely.
In this third session of Parenting Plus: From Survival to Connection, we will explore meltdowns, shutdowns and intense distress through the lens of the nervous system.
We will look beneath the behaviour to understand what happens when a child moves into survival and why reasoning, consequences, questions and reassurance can sometimes add more pressure in the moment.
Together, we will explore recognising the earlier signs of overwhelm, responding during crisis with fewer demands and fewer words, and understanding the often-overlooked recovery period that follows.
We will also make space for the parent’s nervous system.
Because when our child is shouting, hitting, running or completely shutting us out, our own body responds too.
This is not about becoming endlessly calm.
It is not about responding perfectly in impossible moments.
It is about understanding what happens when nervous systems collide and finding ways to move towards safety, recovery and repair.
